Calf Raises - With Bands
A standing calf raise done while holding resistance bands overhead, which adds tension to the calves without needing a machine. It is simple for beginners to set up almost anywhere.

How to do the calf raises - with bands
- Stand on the middle of a resistance band with your toes, keeping even tension on both sides.
- Hold a handle in each hand and raise your arms up beside your head, which will already create some tension on the band.
- Keep your hands near your shoulders as your starting position.
- Rise up onto your toes as you exhale, contracting your calves hard at the top.
- Hold the top position for a second before lowering back down slowly.
- Repeat for the rest of your set, keeping your knees soft throughout.
Original library instructions (5 steps)
- Grab an exercise band and stand on it with your toes making sure that the length of the band between the foot and the arms is the same for both sides.
- While holding the handles of the band, raise the arms to the side of your head as if you were getting ready to perform a shoulder press. The palms should be facing forward with the elbows bent and to the sides. This movement will create tension on the band. This will be your starting position.
- Keeping the hands by your shoulder, stand up on your toes as you exhale and contract the calves hard at the top of the movement.
- After a one second contraction, slowly go back down to the starting position.
- Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.
Common mistakes
- Bending the knees to help push up; keep the legs straight and let the calves do the lifting.
- Rushing the rep and bouncing at the bottom; pause briefly before rising again.
- Standing on an uneven part of the band; center your feet so tension stays balanced on both sides.
- Cutting the range short; rise as high onto the toes as balance allows.
Sets and reps by goal
| Goal | Sets, reps and rest |
|---|---|
| Strength | 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps, 60 to 90 seconds rest |
| Muscle | 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 15 reps, 45 to 60 seconds rest |
| Endurance | 2 to 3 sets of 20 to 25 reps, 30 seconds rest |
Ranges, not prescriptions. Start at the low end and add a set or a rep when every set feels controlled.
Tips
- Hold onto a wall or chair with one hand if balance is an issue while your arms are occupied with the band.
- Pause at the top of each rep rather than bouncing straight back down, for a fuller calf contraction.
